Ever since the #MeToo hashtag came back on social media and women finally started to feel empowered to share their stories of being sexually harassed and/or assaulted, Facebook has aggressively marked such posts as “hate speech” or “bullying/harassment,” and removed the posts. Even when women have shared in private groups, or on their own pages with privacy settings, stories about their personally lived experiences, those posts are still flagged and removed under hate speech rules. What’s even more insulting than targeting women sharing their personal experiences of assault and abuse is that Facebook has attempted to claim credit of being of assistance in the #MeToo Movement’s viral come back. When the reality is that Facebook doesn’t respect women whatsoever. In fact, Facebook thinks women speaking out about their experiences with sexual harassment and/or assault to be a “threat” to all men.
